Manchester United are in dire need of defensive reinforcements this summer and as such, they have been linked with multiple top defenders.

The situation is much worse at left back, with the fitness issues affecting both left backs in Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw.

On that note, just a few days ago, Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the club will indeed sign a left back and the rumours are circulating already.

Just yesterday, it was reported United had already initiated talks with Nice for left back Melvin Bard and today a new left back is being linked with the club.

A report from Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness claims that Manchester United are among the clubs keeping a close eye on Real Madrid left back Ferland Mendy.

Real Madrid have him and Fran Garcia as their left-backs, but they are expected to make a move for Alphonso Davies in the summer. If Davies comes in, Carlo Ancelotti could decide to cash in on Mendy and keep Garcia as a long-term prospect.

The 28-year-old should prove to be a useful acquisition for Man United, offering the squad depth ten Hag desperately needs.

The position of left back in particular has been so depleted that loanee Sofyan Amrabat who is a midfielder has had to fill in there quite a lot with the remainder being covered by centre back Victor Lindelof.

The French international certainly has the quality to do well in the Premier League, and he could be an important addition for practically any of the Premier League sides on account of his quality both in attack and defence.

The opportunity to move to the Premier League at this stage of his career could be hard to turn down, and the French defender is likely to be excited about the possibility of competing in English football.

The report also cites Chelsea and German giants Bayern Munich as admirers of the left back and with both United and Chelsea unable to guarantee him European football next season, Bayern Munich just may be the eventual winners.

In fact, with Madrid’s interest in their left back Davies, a player swap plus cash is certainly enticing to both parties.
