Despite the transfer of Vitor Roque from Athletico Paranaense to Barcelona appearing to be a forgone conclusion, Manchester United reportedly hold onto a glimmer of hope for a last-minute snag.
The headline in Barcelona-based publication Mundo Deportivo today proclaims that Barcelona are nearing the ‘final step to close’ the signing of the young talent.
According to the outlet, a ‘pre-agreement’ for a move to Spain for Roque has been inked in a deal amounting to €35m, with an additional €10m in incentives, and only the final formalities remain to be completed.
However, Mundo Deportivo (via SportWitness) also mentions that Manchester United, along with other influential clubs, have recently contacted Roque’s representatives.
These clubs are attempting to sway the player’s decision, but changing his mind seems a formidable challenge as Roque is firmly focused on his prospective move to Barcelona.
A factor that could potentially disrupt Barcelona’s plans is their current lack of available salary cap space to accommodate Roque’s contract. The club needs to offload some existing players to make room for the new addition or they may opt to keep him on loan at Athletico Paranaense.
This uncertainty at Barcelona could be the reason for Manchester United’s renewed interest, even though it seems a race against the clock at this point.
