Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that Manchester United were seriously scouting Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as the perfect replacement for Casemiro at the heart of midfield.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, United indeed are interested, albeit they haven’t made concrete decisions regarding their midfield.

Speaking to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano made it clear that Gomes has plenty of admirers, including most of the ‘Premier League’s big six’.

According to Romano, the interest from these clubs is nothing concrete as it is still mostly just scouting with no major decisions or moves decided.

“My information for the moment is that Gomes is being scouted by all top clubs in the Premier League, it’s something like 4-5 clubs; but Manchester United have not decided yet what they want to do in the midfield. It will be important to understand the board structure before and what’s going to happen with Casemiro and/or Eriksen to understand how Man United’s plan will evolve,” Romano said.

It is a bit early for anything more concrete to be happening, so it might be some time before we get a clearer idea of what’s going on with Gomes, but United could perhaps be one of the clubs involved once they sort out appointing their new board and also decide on player sales first.

Gomes would be potentially replacing either of Casemiro or Christian Eriksen who are both ageing and there is no absolute certainty over their futures at Old Trafford.

He ranks among the best midfielders in winning back possession, and it is this capacity to break up play and retain possession could be one reason why the Red Devils are so keen on following his progress.

It stands to reason that perhaps until United make a decision on these veterans that it will be possible to make a move for replacements, potentially young Gomes.
