After weeks of the Red Devils targeting Matthijs de Ligt as a key centre-back to rebuild the United squad, the Dutch defender is one step close to a move to Old Trafford.

The move from Bayern Munich to Manchester United would see a reunion of de Ligt and Erik ten Hag who worked together at Ajax, with ten Hag appointed de Ligt as his captain for the Eredivisie side, with the partnership winning the Dutch domestic double, winning the Eredivisie and the Toto KNVB Beker cup, also having a strong UEFA Champions League run making it to the Semi-Finals where they were knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur.

Both men seem to be excited to work together again with de Ligt praising his former manager, saying: “He is someone who loves his job and he loves to work. He wants to do everything to make his team play better.”

He continued: “He’s really into the details. This makes him a really good trainer who improves players. He has a lot of qualities to succeed and we will have to see how he goes.”

Manchester Evening News have reported that personal terms have been agreed verbally and that Bayern are hopeful to have a deal completed very soon.

The Bundesliga side are looking for £42 million for the centre-back which United seem to be happy with so are on the verge of completing the signing of one of their priority targets this summer.
