As The Times report, Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has held talks with Newcastle United co-owner and minority shareholder Amanda Staveley to discuss the appointment of sporting director Dan Ashworth.

The Red Devils and INEOS management in particular are currently emboiled in a negotiations battle with Newcastle for the highly rated executive who is currently on gardening leave at St James’ park.

Everything Ashworth touches turns to gold evident of Brighton’s excellent performances under his tenure despite having a minimal budget.

After the Newcastle consortium takeover, he was trusted to lead the project and got Newcastle back to the Champions League with his behind the scenes decisions.
