Back in September 2022, The Sun claimed Ten Hag had to ‘axe’ five players from the dressing room following an influx of new signings, such as Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Antony and Martin Dubravka.

This was reportedly due to the fact that the AON Training Centre’s first-team changing room could only accommodate up to 24 players, and any others would have to be moved to the U23 facilities.

These five players included Teden Mengi, Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe, Shola Shoretire, and Brandon Williams.

And now, according to Manchester Evening News, Mengi is set to leave the Red Devils for Luton Town before the summer transfer window closes on Friday.

The 21-year-old player has been out on various loan spells in the Championship with clubs such as Derby County and Birmingham City.

He then made his senior Manchester United debut in the Europa League in 2020.

However, the centre-back hasn’t made another league appearance since, which explains his axing from the changing room and potential move to Luton.

It appears that Luton has agreed to sign Mengi permanently, and Ten Hag is happy to free up space in his squad.
