After the dismal season for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag, the Dutchman knew that the FA Cup Final held a lot of weight to his future at Old Trafford.

Not only had United crashed out of the group stages of the Champions League, finishing bottom of their group, but the Premier League club experienced their worst league finish since 1990, ending the season in eighth.

The Red Devils went into the final as underdogs, following a 6-1 aggregate score to Manchester City during the Premier League, with United finishing seven places below City, with the Citizens topping the league.

It was clear from all of this that the odds were stacked against ten Hag’s men.

However, despite these odds, United held out and defeated City 2-1, lifting the FA Cup and securing a spot in the Europa League for the Red Devils thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

This win managed to secure United’s final chance at European football for next season, having won them a spot in the Europa League.

With is dramatic and unexpected win, ten Hag and his men have now won two trophies in two years since he joined the club, a result that is not lost on the fans and pundits alike.

Marco van Basten sure does now a thing or two about success. The former Netherlands and AC Milan superstar is always remembered for being a goalscorer for the ages and, arguably, the best striker in the world during his playing days. Today, van Basten is more of an analyst of football having tried his hand at management after retiring.

Fellow Dutchman van Basten has spoken to Football365 and said he believes Manchester United should give Erik ten Hag more time to turn things around.

The former Netherlands international has commented that “despite few opportunities with the player, he was still able to win the FA Cup, which was very important.”

Van Basten went on to praise ten Hag’s ability to build a team and strengthen them, however believes that he has taken on “too much” with the job of technical director and that alot of his big money signings unfortunately have not performed well.

With Erik ten Hag’s end-of-season review coming this week, it’s expected that his future will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
