Manchester United came close to signing RB Leipzig young superstar Xavi Simons last summer according to a report from Bild.

The young man has transcended his game to world class levels this season in the Bundesliga, leveling up from his slightly less impressive season at PSV Eindhoven last season.

PSG still hold the rights to the Dutchman having exercised their buyback option to bring him back from Dutch side PSV although they immediately loaned him out to RB Leipzig.

According to the report, Manchester United made an attempt to sign him before his move to Germany with ten Hag keen to bring in his fellow Dutchman.

“It’s claimed Erik ten Hag’s side made a €60m bid for the Dutchman and the Paris club had ‘already agreed a deal’ with the Red Devils. However, the move didn’t materialse because the player didn’t want to make a switch to Old Trafford, ” reads the report.

Simons made the decision to choose Germany instead and it seems to have paid of as he has been magnificent for Leipzig and has been one of the most impressive youngsters alongside stars like Bayern’s Jamal Musiala.

His enterprise and performances have seen him contribute 9 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions, a return of just about a goal or assist every other game.

He is an electrifying talent and has the potential to grow into one of the most mobile, most creative 10s in the game.

It is a shame the move did not materialize and the report sadly doesn’t give mention to United having another go this summer.
