David de Gea has stirred the pot with a cryptic post on X, formerly recognised as Twitter, amidst swirling rumors of an unexpected comeback to Manchester United.

At the ripe age of 32, de Gea found himself without a contract in June this year, parting ways with the Red Devils. His vacancy was quickly filled by Andre Onana, who made a transition in a potential £48 million move from the Serie A powerhouse, Inter Milan, the previous July.

Despite this, Onana’s journey to fill the formidable shoes left by the Spaniard has been less than smooth at Old Trafford. His record stands at 20 goals conceded over 13 matches, with a mere four clean sheets to his name.

The Sun earlier reported this week, shedding light on Manchester United’s readiness to acknowledge their error in releasing de Gea during the summer. The club is reportedly engaging in discussions to orchestrate a stunning return for the Spanish goalkeeper.

De Gea’s recent cryptic emoji post on X has only intensified speculation:

Manchester United, who have Altay Bayindir as another goalkeeping option, are purportedly keen on a short-term deal to bring De Gea back into the fold. The club views him as an optimal substitute for Onana, who will be participating in the Africa Cup of Nations come January next year.

Since joining Manchester United from Atletico Madrid back in 2011 for a fee in the ballpark of £18 million, De Gea has donned the United jersey for 545 matches under Erik ten Hag’s management. In doing so, he has etched his name in the club’s history, setting a new record with 190 clean sheets.
